Another health problem is linked to the accumulation of fat around the middle: colon cancer. A recently published study has found a direct link between the amount of visceral fat - that fat found within the abdominal cavity - and the risk of colon cancer. Any excess weight gain can be hazardous to your health, but doctors are increasingly convinced that middle body fat is the worst. Men in particular and women past the age of menopause tend to gain weight at their waistline, and by doing so they are raising their risk of diabetes, heart disease, premature death, and now colon cancer in particular.
Weight loss can be challenging, but a low carbohydrate diet (such as the Weight Loss Eating Plan on this site) have the best clinical track record for visceral weight loss.
